Solar Telescopes of George Ellery Hale
These images accompanied a lecture entitled "The Amazing Solar Telescopes of George Ellery Hale" presented by STM member John W. Briggs during the Saturday afternoon technical session of the 2003 Stellafane convention. A video of the lecture is available on the WWW archive for the meeting, but files seen here are clearer. Images show instrumentation at various observatories associated with the great American astronomer G. E. Hale (1868-1938). Stellafane's Russell W. Porter had close association with Hale during Hale's later years at his Solar Laboratory in Pasadena. Unless otherwise noted, the historical images here are reproduced from prints in collection of J. W. Briggs; and modern images are the photography of JWB, unless otherwise noted. Many original negatives, although reproduced widely since the dedication of Yerkes Observatory in 1897, are owned by University of Chicago. To read the full caption, click on an individual image. Then use the "next" button to go through the following images in sequence. (Later captions remain a work in progress.) Final note: These images were organized for the 2003 presenatation. Additional remarkable instrumentation at Hale's private Solar Laboratory in Pasadena deserves coverage in any description of "Hale's solar telescopes." We hope to add images related specifically to the Hale Laboratory at a later date.
