Although vexed by poor weather at Kenwood, Hale and his assistants quickly achieved pioneering results in solar astronomy using this attachement on the 12-inch refractor. Built by John A. Brashear to Hale's specifications, the spectroheliograph allowed monochromatic photography of the solar photosphere and chromosphere. Hale had independently invented the spectroheliographic concept while an undergraduate student at MIT. After early experiments at Harvard College Observatory, Hale's first real success was with improved instrumentation at his own Kenwood Observatory. Unfortunately this historic instrument appears to be lost.
